Undergraduate Internships

Undergraduate internships in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections are designed to introduce aspiring professionals to the full complement of activities in a Special Collections library, including collection development, outreach, and reference work. Students will also learn about the curatorial profession.

Students may choose from two internship opportunities:

  • The Archival Internship focuses on skills and activities related to managing archives and manuscripts. Students will have the chance to accession, arrange, and describe a manuscript or archives collection under the direction of a manuscripts curator. They will become familiar with archival processing tools and processing standards as well as workflow related to the management of archives.
  • The Rare Books Internship focuses on skills and activities related to managing a rare book library. Under the direction of a rare books curator, students will have the chance to appraise and develop the library’s rare book holdings and to create descriptive bibliographies and research guides which further access to the collections.

Students are encouraged to work with the internship coordinator for their major or minor to receive academic credit for internships in L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

Graduate Internships

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections can provide students in MLS programs with practicum experience in archives and special collections, space permitting. Students may choose to work on one or more projects within the department, including collection development, archival processing, archives management, reference work, or outreach.
