What’s an appointment like at the Research and Writing Center (RWC)?
Generally, tutorials and consultations last between 30-60 minutes - although the length is flexible according to needs and availability.
In a typical writing tutorial, writers and tutors will set an agenda for the session, read through some or all of the text, discuss relevant writing principles and apply new information or ideas to the text as part of the writing or revision process. Writers should come to the tutoring session ready to actively participate in talking, writing, thinking and revising their work.
A research consultation will follow a similar format. Students will discuss and implement research principles, including developing a research topic, finding sources, citing sources, using a citation manager like Refworks, and evaluating sources for credibility. Students should come ready to “learn by doing.”
