How does a hold work, for items currently available in the library or for items that are already checked out?

Faculty and Administrative Personnel : If you have chosen to have your requests delivered, then library items will be delivered to your department office when they become available. You can sign up for deliveries here. For more information, see: https://lib.byu.edu/services/library-delivery-service//.

Students: You will receive an email when the item is ready to be picked up at the General Help Desk located on the main (3rd) floor of the library).

Place a hold online:

  1. Access the library webpage at lib.byu.edu  
  2. Login (click the link in the upper-right corner)
  3. Use the search bar to find items by title, subject, author, and more
  4. Select item you want by clicking on the title
  5. Click "Request Item
  6. Click "Submit request"

Information for holds on items that are currently on the shelf:

  • Notifies library staff to retrieve it
  • You will receive an e-mail when the item is available
  • Holds are typically ready for you in about 24 hours
  • Pick up at the General Help Desk on Level 3

Hold for items already checked out by another patron:

  • You will receive an e-mail when the item is available
  • Pick up at the General Help Desk On Level 3
  • It could be as long as 3 weeks before the item is available
  • If we cannot fill your request quickly, we will email a link to request the item through Interlibrary Loan (https://illiad.lib.byu.edu/illiad/)

Remove a Hold

  • If you no longer need something you placed on hold 
  • To do this, login to your account
  • Click "Cancel" next to the item in your Request list
