Categories of Patrons and Library Fees/Memberships

Spouses and dependents

Spouses and dependents (ages 12–30) of full-time BYU employees and full-time registered students.

No charge.

Friends of the Library

Alumni and community patrons.

Annual membership fee of $50 or larger donations.

Requirements

  • Government-issued ID. Accepted: driver license, military ID, passport, or state ID card issued by the DMV

UALC

Faculty and enrolled students at state-funded colleges and universities and Westminster College.

No charge. Membership renewable by semester.

Requirements

  • Current ID card from a participating institution
  • Government-issued ID. Accepted: driver license, military ID, passport, or state ID card issued by the DMV
  • Proof of permanent address. Accepted: recently postmarked piece of mail with the patron’s first and last name and address; preferably a utility bill or other recurring mailing; junk mail is not accepted

Visiting scholars

Visiting scholars who are employed by the university or who are sponsored by a specific department receive faculty circulation privileges for the length of their employment or sponsorship. Visitors who participate in department-sponsored seminars may receive circulation privileges for the duration of the seminar as requested by the seminar organizers.

High school students

Public and private high school students (grades 9–12).

$10 for each school calendar year.

Requirements

Partnership

Teachers and administrators of participating school districts (generally Utah County).

No charge.

Requirements

  • Current BYU Public School Partnership card (on first visit only)
  • Government-issued ID. Accepted: driver license, military ID, passport, or state ID card issued by the DMV

Family History Center

Service missionaries at the Utah Valley Family History Center located in the Library.

No charge.

Requirements

  • Must be on Family History Center’s list of eligible missionaries for the semester

Checkout Identification

You must have a valid BYU ID card after initial user registration to receive services at the circulation desk.

Loan Period

  • 3 weeks for most Library materials. May be renewed twice online.
  • Shorter due dates for specific items (Locked Case, Special Collections, etc.).
  • There is no grace period.

Maximum Items Checked Out

  • You may have up to 25 items checked out simultaneously.

Renewals

  • Renew most materials at the Circulation Desk.
  • You are permitted one online renewal per item. To access the online renewal system, you must have a NetID. If you do not currently have a NetID, a Library employee will set one up for you at the Circulation Desk.

Recalls and Holds

  • There is a three-week minimum checkout time before an item can be recalled.
  • 48-hour recall period for items needed for Course Reserve.
  • Recall fine of $10 for recalls not returned by the new due date.

Notices

  • First email reminder: 7 days before the due date.
  • Courtesy email notice: 2 days after the due date.
  • You must return or renew materials by the due date or your account will be blocked.
  • You will be blocked from using your Library privileges if you owe fines or have overdue Library materials.

Overdue Fines

  • $1.00 per day, per item, with a maximum fine of $10.00 per item.
  • Your Library account is blocked when one or more items is overdue.
  • If your account is blocked, come to the circulation desk and we’ll help you get it cleared up. Fines can be paid by Cougar Cash, money order, credit card, debit card, or cash.

Billing for Lost Items

  • Patrons will be billed for lost Library materials that are more than four weeks overdue.
  • The bill includes the replacement cost of the item and a non-refundable processing fee of $15.

Member Benefits

The Friends of the Library program provides a supplemental means for acquiring quality materials for academic purposes. Friends donate money for the purchase of books, maps, manuscripts, and other materials that could not otherwise be acquired. Annual membership benefits are granted according to the amount donated. Member classifications are listed below.
