General HBLL statistics
Many of the figures reported below are forwarded to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) each year as a part of their annual statistical surveys. The most current ranking available (for 2002 out of 114 institutions) is shown in parentheses. This ranking is based on the figures shown plus the Hunter Law Library.
Staff (FTE)
As reported each year to ARL and reflect full-time equivalent (FTE) based on the University Formula to determine such.
Students
For 2004 the significant increase was a result of including other funds from which students were paid as opposed to just the library budget for student wages.
Patron Counts
The number reported for total patrons is an estimate based on daily weekday average of patrons per month. The data is taken at the East and West Gates at the main atrium entrance to the library.
Volumes
The Volumes figure reflects the number of bound paper volumes available in the library, including copies, volumes within a given title, and bound serials. The significant increase in volumes in 2001 was due to the addition of bound serials, which in the past had been neglected in the reporting of this statistic.
Serials
Beginning in the ARL Statistical Report for 2002-2003, electronic serials were included in the count for serials, which in the past only included print and microform subscriptions.
Serial counts were changed from total subscriptions to deduped titles and were effective in the 2006 ARL Statistics Survey.
Microforms
An assessment was made of microgorm holdings in the HBLL at the end of 2004. It was discovered that the previous number reported understated the actual number determined from this effort. The figure was adjuested upward to account for the discrepancy.
Graphics
Previous to 2002, Graphics count included only Learning Resource Center (LRC) items. In 2002 this count was altered to include items in Special Collections and digitized images that had been neglected in the past.
Audio
An audit of audio/video materials resulted in a discovery of a gross shortfall in what had been reported in past years. The figure was adjusted in 2001 to reflect this discrepency.
Titles
The Titles figures shown, which is not reported to ARL, indicate the number of titles of all materials (volumes, serials, audio, etc.) in the library online catalog as of the beginning of the academic calendar (Sept. 1) in that calendar year.
Manuscripts & Archives
Manuscripts and Archives shelving space in Special Collections was measured at the end of 2004. The figure from 2004 onward better represents the current status of manuscripts and archives.
