July Meeting
July 21, 2008
During our July meeting we participated in an informative presentation by Carl Johnson from the Copyright Office regarding social networking sites and the copyright implications of sharing media on the internet. It was a timely and relevant presentation and discussion, particularly for librarians. He reminded us that copyright issues often crop up in the context of what we do in the Library particularly with the digital capability of easily copying and distributing media.
Are we correctly adhering to the criteria of Fair Use or Reproduction by Libraries and Archives when making copies? He emphasized how important correct copyright analysis is regarding large digitization projects, such as photos and other media. Similarly, when utilizing the features of social networking sites, he reminded us to apply our knowledge of copyright fundamentals and not encourage others to post full copies of media or other material protected by copyright (often available from the library) on public web sites. Some useful copyright information is available on the Copyright Office website.
He referred to the following items during his presentation:
Code of Best Practice in Fair Use for Online Video
Recut, Reframe, Recycle: Quoting Copyrighted Material in User-Generated Video
