This exhibit focuses on poets and novelists in various stages of their careers and their creative processes. All are or were part of a community of writers, and other authors inspired them during the course of their careers. The displayed manuscripts, letters, drawings, and artifacts come from Perry Special Collections. They provide a glimpse into favorite authors perhaps not considered before. The exhibition shares the spark of creativity and individual personality which shaped a select group of authors ranging from Victorian times until today. This exhibit is located in the Special Collections Reference area on level 1 in the Harold B. Lee Library and will be on display fromAugust 15, 2010 – June 15, 2011. The exhibit may be viewed during the hours that Special Collections is open. Additionally, an online exhibition is available with more items and more commentary than the actual exhibition could accommodate.

About the Event

Booksellers and book owners through the centuries have often embellished the inside and outside of their books; for example, with fine bindings, decorative bookplates, or marbled endpapers. The fore edge (the outer, unbound edge of the block of pages of a book) has provided artists and artisans the opportunity to decorate books. Through October 31, Special Collections will display several examples of decorated fore edges from the rare book collections in the reference room, 1120 HBLL.

Victorian Bible with gauffered edges

“On the Edge: European Decorated Books” features examples of painted fore edges from the 17th to 19th centuries, including paintings which can only be seen by fanning out the pages of the book. Also on display are examples of gauffered edges, books with gilded edges which have then had a design stamped into them with a heated tool.

About the Event

Before – and even to a limited extent after – the advent of printing with moveable type, scribes producing illuminated manuscripts supplied the reading world’s need for books. ‘Manuscript’ means ‘written by hand’ and ‘illuminated’ refers to the reflection of light from the gilt highlights that often decorated the page. Not only were these books the means of transferring knowledge, they were also outstanding examples of Medieval and Renaissance art.

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections is currently exhibiting facsimiles of these manuscripts that share a common theme: the birth of the Savior. The beauty of these pieces mirrors the devotion and reverence shared by the artist and the viewer of these remarkable images.

On display through the end of the year, we invite you to visit Special Collections, enjoy these depictions of this event, and reflect upon how this singular birth has changed the lives of people around the world and throughout time. Because of the far-reaching effects of the Atonement, it can be said of all of us – as it was of Mary – that we have “found favour with God.”
