About the Event:
The story of the building of the transcontinental railroad was done in superb DeMille fashion with Joel McCrea as railroad scout who falls in love with Barbara Stanwyck, sporting an Irish brogue, the feisty daughter of a locomotive engineer. A spectacular train wreck, an Indian attack, and Brian Donlevy as the unscrupulous end-of-track casino owner, made Union Pacific one of the big hits of 1939, already crowded with now-timeless classic films. “Cecil B. DeMille has played with his materials with consummate skill” wrote a film trade publication. “His twenty-five years of picture making have been crammed into one grand prize package.” Items from the Cecil B. DeMille Papers, housed in Special Collections, will be shown.
Paramount. 1939. 135 mins. Director: Cecil B. DeMille.
Shown with the movie: Spy Smasher: Chapter 6 “The Invisible Witness;” Chapter 7 “Secret Weapon.”
