About the Event
Cecil B. DeMille was one of the great producer-directors whose names are synonymous with the Hollywood film industry. DeMille began his career in 1914 with Westerns, a genre which by the early 1930s was mostly “B” product. DeMille revitalized the Western genre with this sweeping saga of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane. Add to it spectacular cavalry rescues, hostage-taking by Indians, the love-hate romance of Hickock and Calamity Jane, and, for good measure, Buffalo Bill Cody, and it is easy to see how DeMille’s showmanship made The Plainsman one of the biggest hits of its day. The showing will be preceded by samples of scene renderings, costume sketches and memorabilia used in the production of The Plainsman, taken from the Cecil B. DeMille Papers in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections. Paramount Pictures. 1936. 113 mins. Director: Cecil B. DeMille.
