About the Event

Frank Capra’s time-honored classic of the indispensable nature of each person’s life, a tale that has never been done better, was Stewart’s favorite film and, according to most sources, Capra’s as well. One’s selfless sacrifice for others, as dramatized in the life of George Bailey (Stewart), seems to hit some snags until he is taught a lesson about life–and death–by an angel (Travers). This now-famous film performed modestly when first released. However, television introduced it to new generations and is responsible for making it one of the most beloved films of all time. We are pleased to present Mr. Stewart’s personal copy of this film, preserved in the BYU Motion Picture Archive since 1983, when the James Stewart Papers were donated to the L. Tom Perry Special Collections. Liberty Pictures/RKO. 1946. 129 mins. Director: Frank Capra.
