About the Event
Producer-director George Stevens took inspiration from the epic Rudyard Kipling poem about a poor water boy in British colonial India who helps save the regiment he serves from a massacre. Grant, McLaglen and Fairbanks are devil-may-care soldiers who try to keep Fontaine from breaking up the fun-loving, danger-seeking trio by marrying Fairbanks. One historian observed that Gunga Din is “equal parts spectacle, suspense, adventure, humor and action” and “remains one of the prime examples of the cinema of exhilaration.” The print shown is the original, uncut version of this timeless classic. RKO Radio Pictures. 1939. 117 mins. Director: George Stevens.
