About the Event

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University is pleased to announce the opening of a special exhibition to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and World War II. The exhibition will be entitled, Remembering World War II: Pearl Harbor and Beyond and will open in mid-August of this year.

The exhibition will feature a wide range of documents including published materials, letters, and pictures as well as artifacts from the war. Each item will contribute insights into the experience of Americans during the War. Included among these items will be the Medal of Honor awarded to Mervyn Bennion, Captain of the West Virginia, a battleship which was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition, religious items such as the Servicemen’s Book of Mormon used by President Boyd K. Packer will be featured. Other contents of the exhibition will include fliers, medals, newspaper clippings, letters and an American flag created near the end of the Pacific War by Clarance Bramley, a survivor of the Bataan Death March.

The exhibition will be held in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections on the first floor of the Harold B. Library and will run from mid-August of 2006 until January 2007. As part of the exhibition, there will be a series of special events. The first will be a House of Learning Lecture on September 21st by Bob Freeman, Director of the Saints at War Project. In addition, a special conference will be convened on October 12th and 13th. Finally, on December 7th a special event will be conducted to honor Pearl Harbor veterans including Medal of Honor recipient, Captain Mervyn Bennion.

Speaking of the upcoming exhibition, Bob Freeman, Director of the Saints at War Project at BYU, commented: “it really is unprecedented to have an exhibition of this quality in the intermountain region which tells the story of World War II through the eyes of those who experienced it. The exhibit should be a must see for both old and young alike so that we can preserve the memory of the sacrifice of men and women during this unique period in history.”
