About the Event

Moab, Utah has been the location for more than 75 movies since 1950 when director John Ford filmed Wagon Master there. In this widescreen Western, Texas Ranger John Wayne and captured gambler Whitman come up against a gunrunner (Persoff) who arms the Comanche indians in hopes of setting up an empire in Texas. Comedy and large-scale Western action team up in this most enjoyable adaptation of Paul Wellman’s novel. Wayne also directed much of the picture for the ailing Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood) in what would be the veteran director’s final film. The expansive and colorful red rock landscape along the Colorado River north of Moab is shown to great advantage in the widescreen process of CinemaScope. 20th Century-Fox. 1961. CinemaScope and Color. 107 mins. Director: Michael Curtiz.
