About the Event

The first sound version of Victor Hugo’s novel of the hunchback Quasimodo, the gypsy girl Esmeralda to whom he is attracted (played by 19-year-old O’Hara in her first American film), and the unscrupulous Chief Justice who wants her for himself. The most expensive film made by RKO Radio Pictures and a box office hit even though overshadowed by the simultaneous release of Gone with the Wind. Directed with surprising frankness and flair by William Dieterle, this is the must-see version. RKO Radio Pictures. 1939. 116 mins. Original theatrical trailer.
