About the Event

Thomas L. Kane’s enigmatic character has always been a puzzle for historians. I will focus on some key incidents in Kane’s life–including occasions during the Utah War and the Civil War in which he issued (or almost issued) challenges for duels–to suggest that the cultural system of honor sheds light both on Kane’s life and on his defense of Mormonism.
