Collections

The Periodicals Room contains one of the largest collections of periodicals and newspapers in the country. Also available to BYU patrons are over 300 databases with many of those making articles available in full-text.

Periodical Collection

The periodical collection of over 22,000 titles is contained in our room. The collection is split chronologically with all volumes before and including 1989 in the compact shelving (East side) and all volumes after 1989 in the open shelves (West side). Periodicals cannot be checked out.

Electronic Databases

Electronic databases and periodical indexes may be accessed on the computers in the Periodicals Department. A variety of full text journals are available through these indexes, as well as through web sites listed in the BYU Library Catalog.

Newspapers

We have many local and national newspapers in the Periodicals Room. Titles include the Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake Tribune and The Daily Herald, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. These newspapers are found behind the Periodicals Reference Desk upon request. Newspapers are checked out for two hours and must stay in the room. In addition, there are many newspapers available through online databases and the internet.

Locked Case

The Periodicals Locked Case contains rare and sensitive material. Also contained in the Locked Case are CD’s and other multimedia materials. Locked Case material is available upon request. Locked Case material cannot be checked out and must be returned to the Periodicals Reference Desk.

Reference Material

The first couple rows of the compact shelves hold all the reference material that is found in the Periodicals Room. Look here for encyclopedias, dictionaries, foreign language dictionaries, indexes and almanacs. Style manuals are found at the Periodicals Reference Desk and are available upon request.
