OR

To find folktales or fairy tales using the catalog:

1. Open the HBLL homepage

2. Below the main search bar choose “Advanced Keyword Search”

3. Once in the advanced search, go to the drop-down menu that is labeled location and select “Juvenile Collection”

4. Go up to the pull-down menu labeled genre and type either “folklore” or “fairy tales”

5. Select items that have 398.2 call numbers.

To find folktales or fairy tales from a specific country:

1. Follow steps 1-3 above.

2. Go to the pull-down bar labeled genre/form and type “folklore”  or “fairy tales” plus the county of interest, such as German, France, Japan,  Ukraine.

To find a specific fairytale, ex: Cinderella:

1. Open the HBLL homepage

2. Below the main search bar choose “Advanced Keyword Search”

3. Once in the advanced search, go to the drop-down menu that is labeled location and select “Juvenile Collection”

4. Go up to the pull-down menu labeled subject and type in ‘Cinderella’.

5. Search. You should find about 30 titles. The newest books will be listed first.

OR

1. Open the HBLL homepage

2. Below the main search bar choose “Advanced Keyword Search”

3. Once in the advanced search, go to the drop-down menu that is labeled location and select “Juvenile Collection”

4. Go up to the pull-down labeled subject and type in the name of the person on whom you would like to find a biography. Example: Abraham Lincoln. Search. You will find about 120 titles on Abraham Lincoln.

3. Once in the advanced search, go to the drop-down menu that is labeled location and select “Juvenile Collection”

4. Go up to the pull-down labeled “genre/form” and type in ‘ Children’s poetry’ or  “Humorous poetry.”  Search.

To find poems on a specific subject, go to the pull-down labeled search all and type a subject plus “juvenile poetry”  such as  ‘guinea pigs juvenile poetry”

Also try an author search with the surname first.  Some recommended authors are: Nikki Grimes, Shel Silverstein, Barbara J. Esbensen, Jack Prelutsky, and Alice Schertle.

2. Select “Library Catalog” under Unique Collections at BYU
3. Below the main search bar choose “Advanced Keyword Search”
4. Go to the pull-down menu labeled search all and type in a term that represents the subject of your search, such as “World War II.” If you are looking for both fiction and non-fiction books go to the pull-down menu labeled location and select Juvenile Collection. Search. The newer books will be listed first.
5. Display the details for at least one item to find the official subject terms for your search. For World War II, the subject term is “World War, 1939-1945.” Use this term to refine your search.
6. To limit your search to fictional books, go to the pull-down menu labeled subject and type “Juvenile fiction.” Search.
7. To limit your search to non-fiction books, go to the pull-down menu labeled subject and type “Juvenile literature.” Search.

To find websites on social studies topics:

1. Search the following search engines that are designed for use by young people using a term that represents the subject of your search:

Quintura for Kids

• Intended for use by children grades K-6.
• Quintura is a filtered search engine based on the Yahoo! Kids search engine but with an innovative visual mind map browsing capability.

Ask for Kids

• Intended for use by children in grades K-6.
• Ask for Kids is a filtered web search engine associated with Ask.com. All websites accessible through the search engine are selected by editors on the criteria of appropriateness, depth, quality, and style.

Easy: To find alphabet books, browse the 411 call number in the juvenile literature collection.

To find counting books, browse the 511 call number in the juvenile literature collection.

Better: To find concept books beyond alphabet and counting books, consult A to Zoo: Subject Access to Children’s Picture Book (7^th ed.) Call number: JUVENILE REFERENCE PN 1009.5 .P5 X56 2006.

Using the Subject Guide, begin with the term Concepts to find a list of books. To find specific concepts, continue to browse the subheadings, such as Concepts—color or Concepts—in & out. Take the titles you wish to find to the HBLL homepage, and do a title search to find the call number.

5. Go up to the drop-down menu labeled genre/form and type “pop-up books.” Search.
6. The newest books will list listed first. To find older titles, use the term “toy and movable books.” Select the titles you would like see and take the list of titles and call numbers to the reference assistant in 4720 HBLL to have the books retrieved for use.
