FDS Takes Over OIT’s Media Delivery

Faculty/Graduate Delivery Services will now be delivering LRC media items to departments for use in classroom instruction. The Office of Information Technology previously provided this service, but the Lee Library is now assuming those duties.

To request an item patrons may either contact the LRC directly or place an electronic request through our ILLiad Client for advanced scheduling of the item.

Thursday and Friday Services

Thursday and Friday, August 13 – 14, there will be no Faculty Deliveries due to the Graduation events and the early closure of most Department Offices. If you would like us to make an exception for Friday only please call us at 422-5282, however even in those cases we will not be able to deliver any earlier than 12:30pm. Please remember that we have a turnaround time of 24 hrs and plan accordingly.

ILLiad Scheduled Outage

We will be upgrading our ILLiad client and migrating to a new server as of approximately 12:00pm MDT, Monday, July 20. ILLiad will not be accessible for a few hours; we anticipate going back online sometime late Monday or early Tuesday. During this outage we will not be able to process any faculty/graduate delivery or interlibrary loan requests. Please place any urgent requests before Monday morning.

Faculty: Get Your Book on a Kindle!

The ILL office is experimenting with the Amazon Kindle for faculty users. Where available, we will try to get a ebook version of the text requested for interlibrary loan. This will help speed up delivery time and, in some cases, even provide a book which other libraries either are unwilling or unable to lend.

We anticipate these items will primarily be very new titles (published within the last 6 months) or very popular titles (e.g., NY Bestsellers).

Initially, we will contact faculty members to see if they are willing to accept the requested item on the Kindle instead of in print. In the future, we anticipate having an opt in or out option on the loan request form.

If you would like us to look first for a Kindle version of your request, please mention that in the Notes field of the request form and we would be happy to search for you!

We are excited to explore the possibilities the Kindle has to offer!

Since Amazon has continued to deny any written agreement with us, we have decided to discontinued our (brief) pilot. We plan on revisiting this pilot if Amazon does offer written confirmation.

Here is the HBLL’s official statement: The Interlibrary Loan Office of the Harold B. Lee Library designed a pilot program to test Kindle Reading Devices as a tool to support faculty research. This program was designed with verbal consent from Amazon. The library administration has postponed implementation of the program until written permission is received from Amazon.

Graduate Delivery Items

Did you know that we are now paging items and scanning articles for Graduate Students? Items can be requested by importing the record through the ILLiad database and will be placed on hold at Circulation for checkout.

To start: update the patron account through logging into ILLiad and scrolling to the bottom.

Then: contact Borrowing ILL Services to change your patron status to Graduate.

Update on Better World Books

We are still conducting our study on using Better World Books as an Interlibrary loan supplier. We wrote about it here. Since posting, we learned that each item should have a sticker on the back similar to the image at the bottom of this post. This has the due date, ordering information, and cost to purchase. What’s more, it appears that the prices of the books tend to be fairly low–only a few dollars in some cases. If you want to purchase the item for yourself–give us a call and let us know so we can complete your request on our end (this will prevent any overdue notices for the item you purchased) and remember to bring back our bookstrap. We would love to see this part of the service used and hear your comments!

Better World Books Pilot

The BYU Interlibrary Loan Department is trying out a new service provided by a commercial book vendor: Better World Books. Better World Books (BWB) is a book vendor that deals in used books; its primary goal is to provide books to underprivileged communities around the world. BWB has partnered with Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), a nation library database to study the viability of delivering books to library patrons for loan or for purchase.

The Harold B. Lee Library is conducting a simple pilot to see if that service would be useful to the BYU community. Over the next few months we will be selecting some of our book interlibrary loan requests for the pilot. If your request has been selected, BWB will send the book to us and we will notify you to pick up the book as normal; you will get the book and a purple book slip (see the image in this post) as a reminder that this is a special loan. If you would like to keep the book, call us at 422-6344 or come to our office for more information. If you just want to borrow the book, simply return it to our department by the designated due date as usual.

Frustrated With Us?
