Tip of the Week: Independent Reading

November 16, 2009

Does your child insist that you read to him when he is able to read for himself? Begin reading together a book that is at his reading level.  (Need suggestions?  Ask a librarian or do an advanced search on Amazon.com.)  Read until you get to an exciting, on-the-edge- of-your- seat part. Then end the reading session.  He’ll probably be curious enough to  pick up the book, read and  find out for himself what happens. -Ruth-Anne Brown, BYU Student, School of Education
