Video Tutorials

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

We work with a lot of sophisticated databases, each with its own interface. Even if you’ve been to one of our clinics it can be hard to remember how to use them. To make things easier we’re working on short video tutorials that demonstrate specific tasks using certain databases. Here’s an example, for the Mint Global database:

videolinkOn many of our subject guides you can find a link to these tutorials just above the Live Chat box. We’ll be adding more links as we work on this project. If there’s a tutorial you’d like to see, let us know. You can see the ones we’ve done so far here.

Subject Guide Switchover

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

newsubguide

We’ve completed the first step in remaking our old subject guides. Rather than wait for the Library’s official switchover date we thought Business and Economics could lead the way, so we’ve replaced the Subject Guide links on the right side of this website with links to the new guides.

We think they’re a huge improvement, but we’d like to know what you think. Also, some bits are still getting sorted out, like the “Recent Articles” section on some guides including a few not-so-recent articles. Please point out any other problems to us, either by commenting on the guides themselves or by contacting us directly. And stay tuned for new additions, including embedded video tutorials.

If you miss the old Subject Pages, you can still find them here for now.

LibGuides are here!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

We’re transitioning to a new content management system. The old Subject Guides (linked on the right side of this page) will soon be replaced. We’ll have greater control over content and format with the new guides, they’ll have some Web 2.0 features, and we’ll be able to embed some media, all with the hopes of making your research easier.

You can take a look at the new guides that we’re building now (links below). The switch will happen with the start of Fall Semester.

Gale Directory Library

Monday, January 12th, 2009

We have acquired electronic versions of several key reference titles on the Gale Directory Library platform, which allows for some useful features, such as exporting lists of companies or associations to MS Excel.  These include current editions of:

  • American Wholesalers and Distributors Directory
  • Consultants and Consulting Organizations Directory
  • Encyclopedia of Associations
  • National Directory of Nonprofit Organizations
  • Brands and Their Companies
  • Market Share Reporter

Click on advanced search and you can select a specific title and search to find a consultancy in Utah, or to see what the market share is for Honda’s Civic Hybrid.

New Reference Sources

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

We are in the process of converting the Management and Economics Reference Collection into electronic versions. Here are some recent highlights:

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 2nd edition, edited by Steven N. Durlauf and Lawrence E. Blume, contains over 1,850 articles by more than 1,500 leading economists. It’s a great source for biographies of important economists, and the place for an introduction to any topic in economics. When you’re ready to dig deeper, each article provides a bibliography of key sources.

The Business and Economics Collection from Blackwell Reference includes specialized encyclopedias and handbooks on topics from cross-cultural management to entrepreneurship, from mediation to mentoring to macroeconomics.

Note that entries for all these e-books are included in the library’s catalog so they can be included in the results whenever you search for books.
