Advertised as the Great American Motion Picture, this lavish frontier epic was one of the Fox Studio’s biggest productions of the year, chronicling the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (Vincent Price), the expulsion of the Latter-day Saints from Nauvoo, and their trek, under the leadership of Brigham Young (Dean Jagger), to the Salt Lake Valley. Church President Heber J. Grant, who authorized Church historical assistance to studio writers during the production process, called the film “a friendmaker,” and Salt Lake City hosted an historic Hollywood-style star-studded premiere.
