I Was A Male War Bride

Starring: Cary Grant, Ann Sheridan, Marion Marshall, Randy Stuart.

War-torn Germany is the background for Hawks’s unusual romantic comedy about an American WAC who marries a French officer and becomes involved in bureaucratic red tape getting back to  the USA. Male-female role reversals make this comedy all the more hilarious as Grant, who had previously been directed by Hawks in Bringing Up Baby, Only Angels Have Wings, and His Girl Friday, poses as a war “bride.” Said Grant, “I’ve been in many comedies but I’ve never heard an audience react like this one. I honestly feel it’s the best comedy I’ve ever done.” The director’s personal papers are preserved in Special Collections.

20th Century-Fox. 1949. 105 mins. Director: Howard Hawks.

Mysterious Doctor Satan: Chapter 9, “Double Jeopardy,” 17 mins.
