What are the copyright rules for music?

Music enjoys all of the standard exclusive rights granted by the U.S. Copyright Act. This includes right of reproduction, distribution, adaptation, and public performance. Any use that infringes on those rights and is outside the scope of Fair Use (Section 107) or the Classroom/Teaching Exemption (Section 110(1)) would require permission.
