Biographical HistoryRussell Rogers Rich was born
January 5, 1912 to Jesse Pomeroy and Louise Rogers
Rich in Chicago, Illinois. His father was a law student at the University of
Chicago at the time of his birth. He attended school in Preston, Idaho and
Logan, Utah, graduating from Logan High School in
1929. While in high school, he participated in
both track and football. He attended one year at Utah State Agricultural
College in Logan, Utah, before serving as an LDS missionary in Germany and
Austria from
1930-1933. He graduated from Utah State in
1936, serving as student body president his senior
year.
Following graduation, Dr. Rich accepted a position in the LDS Church
Education System. He taught seminary in Driggs, Idaho and Logan, Utah. In
1946 he accepted the position of Director of the
Institute of Religion at Arizona State University in Tempe. He was awarded a
master's degree in Church History from Brigham Young University in
1949 and the following year was appointed
Institute Director at the University of Wyoming. In
1953 he was transferred to Brigham Young
University where he taught for twenty-four years for the College of Religion.
From
1955 to 1960 he served as chairman of the Church
History Department. He retired from active teaching in
1977. In
1955 he was awarded a Doctor of Education degree
from the University of Wyoming.
Among the many classes Dr. Rich taught at BYU were the survey classes
in LDS Church History (Religion 341, 342, 343) for which he prepared a detailed
study guide to B.H. Robert's Comprehensive History of the Church.
He also authored the current textbook for Religion 342, (History of the Church,
1846 to 1900) Ensign to the Nations.
Dr. Rich taught several graduate classes in Mormon history, the student papers
from these classes are an important part of this collection.
Dr. Rich is best known for his study of Mormon schismatic movements.
He is an expert on various Mormon Splinter groups, spending many of his summers
visiting with these various groups and corresponding frequently with these
various groups and corresponding frequently with the various churches' leaders
and members. He not only collected their literature on his visits, but he also
frequently subscribed to their publications. During the late fifties and early
sixties he delivered several Leadership Week lectures on his research of these
churches which were later published.
Dr. Rich married Margeret Cardon on
June, 1936, in the Salt Lake City Temple and they
are the parents of seven children. The Riches served as tour guides in the
Independence, Missouri, Visitor's Center of the LDS Church from
1981 to 1983.
His writings include: "History of the Latter-day Saints Settlement of
the Bear Lake Valley,
1863-1900" (master's thesis, BYU,
1949); "Certain Aspects of Religious Education in
Publicly Supported Colleges and Universities in the States of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools" (Ph. D. dissertation, University
of Wyoming,
1955); Those Who Would be Leaders(
1958); Land of the Sky-Blue Water (
1963); Ensign to the Nations (
1962); "Where Were the Moroni Visits?" BYU
Studies 10 (Spring
1970): 255-258 and "The Dogberry Papers and the
Book of Mormon" BYU Studies10 (Spring
1970): 315-320.
Notes on ArrangementThe collection consists of three main sections: Personal Files,
materials relating to his teaching career at BYU, and materials relating to
Mormon splinter groups.
Personal Files Dr. Rich's personal
files are arranged in alphabetical order. For the sake of space, several files
have been combined and duplicates removed. In cases where the personal files
contained materials relating to Mormon Splinter groups, these materials have
been placed in the Mormon Schisms files. Dr. Rich's index of the original files
is located in box 1, folder 1.
Teaching Career at BYU For several
years Russell Rich was known as "Mr. Church History" by his colleagues in the
College of Religion. Among his former students are many who are respected
scholars in LDS Church history. Dr. Rich also wrote many of the study guides
which were used in the teaching of Church history at BYU.
The majority of this part of the collection comprises the tests,
course outlines, handouts and notes from the classes which he taught. These
classes are divided into undergraduate, graduate and home study courses.
Classes are listed in the container list by the name and course year. Several
of his classes which dealt with the doctrines of the LDS Church and other world
religions required several folders. Where this occurred, class materials were
divided according to subject. Duplicates of tests and handouts were
removed.
There are also seven bound volumes of graduate student papers as well
as several folders of unbound student papers on the doctrines of the LDS Church
and various aspects of its history. No attempt was made to list the titles of
these papers except where Dr. Rich had previously identified a group of papers.
Copies of several of these papers were earlier deposited in Special
Collections.
Correspondence of the general nature is located in box 10, folders 2
and 3. Dr. Rich's except those dealing with Mormon schismatic movements, are
also located in this section.
Mormon Splinter Groups An important
part of this collection is the material which Dr. Rich collected concerning
Mormon splinter groups. Dr. Rich has collected information on the majority of
the churches which claim Joseph Smith as their founder. He subscribed to a
number of their publications and collected their literature on his many visits
with their leaders and members.
These materials which Dr. Rich collected concerning Mormon splinter
groups are listed according to the various groups. Where both the name of the
church and its founder are known they are listed in the container list. The
listing of these churches in the container list is neither alphabetically or
according to the beginning date of the church.
Correspondence dealing with Mormon splinter groups in general is
located in box 20, folder 6. Correspondence with or about individual churches
has been kept with other materials about the church and is noted in the
container list.
Three bound volumes of graduate student papers deal specifically with
schismatic movements. Only one, however, could be located as the collection was
being processed. There is an index which Dr. Rich made for these three volumes.
Copies of many of these papers have been deposited in Special Collections.
A volume which students interested in Mormon splinter groups may find
useful and which was used in the cataloging of this material is Steven Shield's
Divergent Paths of the Restoration (Bountiful: Horizon Publishing,
1982).
Miscellaneous As this collection was being completed, the
Archives were given a copy of Riches' missionary homecoming address and it has
been placed at the end of the collection.
Separation StatementA box of photographs has been transferred to the UA Photo archives.
The photographs include photos from various trips he took, photos dealing with
Mormon schisms, photos of various LDS Church history sites, photos used in his
book Ensign to the Nations, and College of Religion faculty
photos. Photocopies have been made of his photos dealing with Mormon splinter
groups and have been placed with the other material relating to these various
churches.
