Engineering and Technology is a relatively new college, but the root of each of
its programs goes much further. Originally the new college was formed to help
meet the growing demands for engineers and scientists, and composed of six
departments from the College of Arts and Sciences plus the expansion of five
departments from the department of Engineering and Sciences. Since then there
was a strong demand for the engineering departments to be administered by their
own college and appointed dean, and in 1972 the new College of Engineering
Sciences and Technology was announced.Contains correspondence from 1977-1987
of the following people in the College of Engineering and Technology: L.

Biographical HistoryThe College of Engineering and Technology is a relatively new college,
but the roots of each of its programs go back much further. It was 1896 when
formal action was taken by the Board of Trustees to create the Collegiate
Department; six years later this department was officially recognized by the
Academy and was listed as such in the annual catalog. But because of the lack
of enrollment all engineering courses were eliminated and woodwork and drafting
were transferred to Department of Applied Arts. In 1953 a new department of
Physical and Engineering Science was organized under the first Dean, Dr. Harvey
Fletcher. Dr. Fletcher helped organize a combination of departments and courses
taught, which represented the modern trend of bringing together into one
college the various branches of fundamental physical sciences and engineering.
By 1964 the trend toward engineering graduate work at BYU was clear, and Dr.
Jens J. Jonsson was assigned as chairman of the committee to develop a PhD
program in engineering. In 1972 the new College of Engineering Sciences and
Technology was created to meet the demand for the engineering departments to be
administered by themselves and an appointed dean. Since then several
adjustments have been made, and in 1985 the college was renamed The College of
Engineering and Technology.
