The Early Rexburg Commercial Papers Collection consists of hundreds of documents and business paraphernalia from the Rexburg area during the years from 1900-1930. The collection was cut and organized from an old deteriorating scrapbook in order to preserve and maintain the integrity of the collection. Though evidence suggests that the scrapbook was compiled by Arthur C. Porter, a prominent, early citizen and entrepreneur of the Rexburg area, there is no definitive evidence of the scrapbooks origin.
The Early Rexburg Commercial Papers Collection is a somewhat eclectic mix of documents and items from the early Twentieth Century. The collection also features many names of prominent citizens of the Upper-snake River Valley. Thus, a complete calendar of the materials was created in order to make the diversity of documents more utile.
The original collection was organized somewhat by content and this categorical organization was maintained and clarified. Some materials may seem out of place, but this displacement was necessitated because some materials were glued to the back of other materials. Of particular interest in this collection is folder three which contains some original caricatures and political cartoons sketched by the local artist D. L. Long. Also included is a collection of blank letterheads and return envelopes for various businesses from the Rexburg area. Additionally, the collection includes many invitations and business papers from the old Ricks Academy. The majority of the materials in the collection have been de-acidified and copied to prevent deterioration.
