Biographical HistoryKuulei Bell is one of three remaining Church members who are full time
residents in Kalaupapa, and continues to serve as postmistress for Kalaupapa.
The Kalaupapa and Kalawao areas is located on a peninsula on the north side of
the islands of Molokai and was used from the end of the nineteenth century to
the 1970's as a settlement for Hansen's disease patients.
Scope and Content NoteThe collection consists of correspondence, tax and financial records,
annual reports, receipt books, minute books and activity records, transcripts
and accounts of historical events, photographs, and duplications of historical
documents, and class rolls from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
branch at Kalaupapa and Kalawao, Molokai, the site of a settlement for those
afflicted with Hansen’s disease that was founded in the early 1860’s. While
multiple collections on the history of the settlement exist in both Bishop
Museum and the Hawaii State Archives, as well as other private collections, the
Kalaupapa/Kalawao collection at BYUH is primarily focused on the LDS branch in
the 20th century.
