American composer, was born on January 18, 1893 in Los Angeles, California. He
received his higher education at the University of California at Berkeley,
obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Letters and Science in 1917, and the
master of Arts degree in Russian in 1919. He returned many years later to
receive the Doctor of Philosophy degree in English in 1940. In 1973 he was
awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Southern Utah State
College in Cedar City. He has been a member of Phi Beta Kappa since 1916. He
has studied music for many years and has composed many pieces. The John L. Seymour papers consists of
approximately 34 shelf feet of correspondence, doctoral dissertation notes,
music manuscripts, programs and newspaper reviews of performances and
recordings (one phonograph record and six 7-inch reels of tape) of
performances.ProvenanceThe Seymour collection consists primarily of the manuscripts of the
music composed by Seymour. The original manuscripts in pencil and copies in ink
were produced by Seymour's hand, and there are also many copies of the
manuscripts produced by various photocopying methods. Most of the music
manuscripts, along with the correspondence, newspaper reviews and programs of
performances which were alongside the music manuscripts, came to the Archives
in manila envelopes. All of the items were taken out of the envelopes and put
in folders for better archival preservation, and whenever Seymour had written
notes about the music on the envelopes they were kept in the folders along with
the manuscripts. The correspondence was arranged in a separate correspondence
file, but the programs and reviews were kept with the music. The bulk of the
material was donated by the composer in 1971 and Seymour has continued
periodically since that time to add the manuscripts of his most recent
works.

Biographical HistoryJohn Laurence Seymour, American composer, was born on January 18, 1893
in Los Angeles, California. He received his higher education at the University
of California at Berkeley, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Letters and
Science in 1917, and the master of Arts degree in Russian in 1919. He returned
many years later to receive the Doctor of Philosophy degree in English in 1940.
In 1973 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Southern
Utah State College in Cedar City. He has been a member of Phi Beta Kappa since
1916.
Ever active in music, he studied violin with Lalla Fagge and harmony
with Fannie Charles Dillon. He traveled to Europe in 1922 and 1928 where he
studied opera with Vincent D'Indy in Paris and with Ildebrando Pizzetti in
Italy. He went to Japan in 1932 and in later years made several trips to South
America.
From 1926 to 1950 he was head of the drama department of Sacramento
(California) Junior College, and from 1928 to 1936 also served as operalogist
and dramatic reader for the University of California extension in Sacramento.
Since 1970 he has been a special librarian at Southern Utah State College. He
became a member of ASCAP in 1940, and is presently an active member of the
Utah-Bolivia Partners and a Honorary life member of the Main-Rio Grande del
Norte Partners.
He has written much chamber music as well as numerous works for solo
instrument and voice, and also several concertos. He is, however, best known
for his operas and operettas. His opera,
In the Pasha's Garden, was performed at the metropolitan
Opera House in 1935, and for it he received the David Bispham Memorial Medal,
an award given to American composers whose works are performed on that stage.
Another opera,
Ollanta, El Jefe Kolla, based on a Bolivian historical
theme, received three medals from the Bolivian Games Committee when it was
performed in La Paz.Scope and Content NoteThe John L. Seymour papers consists of approximately 34 shelf feet of
correspondence, doctoral dissertation notes, music manuscripts, programs and
newspaper reviews of performances and recordings (one phonograph record and six
7-inch reels of tape) of performances.
Notes on ArrangementThe correspondence, which comprises one folder, is primarily incoming
and covers the years between 1922 and 1971. Much of it deals with obtaining
permission from various authors to use their works as texts for musical
compositions by Seymour. The correspondence is arranged chronologically. The
notes for and handwritten draft of Seymour's doctoral dissertation, which are
contained in four notebooks and six envelopes, have been placed at the end of
the collection next to the correspondence.
The music manuscripts, which range from Seymour's earliest
compositions to his most recent, are arranged according to type of music. Works
for Solo instrument and voice come first, followed by chamber music, orchestral
music, ballet, and finally operas, operettas and musical plays. Perhaps his
work which has received the widest acclaim is the opera,
In the Pasha's Garden, which was performed at the New York
Metropolitan Opera House in 1935. Many of his works for solo instrument and
voice have been published as well as some larger works such as his operettas
The Two Gentlemen of Veronaand
Ming Toy. Two of his operas,
The Lure and the Promiseand
Nephi: The Tender Boughdeal with Mormon themes. His
ballet, The
Closed Gateand his opera
Ramonaas well as much of his chamber music have been
performed on the BYU campus. There are also programs and newspaper reviews for performances of some
of the pieces of music in the collection. The programs and reviews, and also
the recordings of performances have been filed with the music manuscripts.
