This addendum contains a variety of papers that cover the full life span of Mr. Clark. However, the great bulk of the material here are his personal diaries and his financial records.
This portion of the Clark collection is organized into 19 Series. Series 1 - Biographical Material. This series includes biographies and newspaper articles that describe the life of J. Reuben Clark Jr. Series 2 - Journals, diaries, and schedules of J. Reuben Clark Jr. It includes handwritten, typed, and shorthand diaries. Many are personal diaries from 1916 to 1961. Some of his diaries from the same time period are more business oriented. These include diaries about military service, ranches/farms/meat, cattle diseases, and several other subjects. This series also includes his diary outlines and excerpts from his father’s diary. Series 3 - Ranching award and records. It includes the nomination to the hall of fame in 1962 in Oklahoma, Grazing papers from 1952 to 1960, and Island Grazing records from 1936 to 1962. Series 4 - Correspondence. This series includes various personal, business, and government correspondences. Several items contain signatures of well-known people, such as U.S. and Mexican Presidents. Series 5 - President Clark’s wife and children. This includes notebooks and diaries of his wife and children, including an autograph book that has been placed in the vault because of signatures it contains. It also includes several items about theater and drama, including some play scripts. Series 6 - Dicta. These are collections of short, often quotable, sayings by President Clark on a wide variety of subjects. Series 7 - Published and unpublished writings. This includes documents in relation to Behold the Lamb of God and Stand Fast by the Constitution. It also includes excerpts regarding World Conditions, especially Communism and the Constitution. Series 8 - President Clark’s Speeches. This series contains divers addresses given by JRC Jr. Series 9 - Foreign Relations Material. This series contains a few items dealing with United States foreign policy, most of which were written by JRC Jr. while he was Undersecretary of State. Series 10 - LDS Church material. This series contains seminary and institute directories from 1960-1961 and 12 volumes of the annual report of the LDS Church Welfare Plan. Series 11 - J. Reuben Clark Library. This small series contains a few items concerning his personal library. Series 12 - Memorabilia and miscellaneous. This small series contains his embossing stamp (unfortunately the lower plate is missing), line of authority cards, stationary, to do lists and an address book. Series 13 - Items which date near the time of his death. This series includes letters and correspondence written to JRC Jr. just before or just after his death. It also contains obituaries, newspaper articles about his funeral, and letters requesting that his name be removed from mailing lists. Series 14 - Funeral Service and Obituaries. This series contains transcriptions and audio disk recordings of talks given at his funeral, and more obituaries. Series 15 - Estate of JRC Jr. This series contains correspondence, and records relating to decisions regarding his estate. Series 16 - Reference files. This series is a collection of his files on topics that interested him. Series 17 - Photographs. This series contains a few photographs of the KSL radio tower when it was new, photos from the dedication of Pioneer Pipeline, several photos of a trip to Nauvoo, and photos of Oliver Cowdery’s handwritten account of receiving the Aaronic priesthood. Series 18 - Financial files. This series contains financial files organized by year including, but not limited to accounts – payable, accounts – receivable, bank statements, cancelled checks, checkbooks, copies of tax returns, disbursements, estate files, expense statements, farm bills, graph paper, income tax files, income vouchers, invoices, medical payments and claims, paycheck stubs, property list, property tax files, receipts, refunds, reports, Social Security files, tax guides, & work sheets. Series 19 - Duplicates of materials in the J. Reuben Clark Jr. Collection. This series contains one box of photocopies.
Note: many of these volumes overlap in time, because Mr. Clark kept different diaries for different compartments of his life, so it is impossible to place them in strict chronological order. For that reason they are arranged according to their first date, rather than by their inclusive dates.
