Biographical HistoryThomas Edgar [Ted] Lyon, Jr., was born the fifth son of T. Edgar Lyon
and Laura Hermana Forsberg on 13 May 1939 in Salt Lake City . He and his twin
brother Joseph Lynn Lyon were the second pairs of twins born in his family.
They were referred to as the "American Twins," because they were born in
America. His elder twin brothers were born in Holland and were called the
"Dutch Twins."
Early in his life, Ted established a pattern of discipline that
persists today. He actively participated in Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) activities, academics, and high school
athletics. He was blessed with a good mind and attended the University of Utah
until he left for his mission to Argentina in 1959. He continued his education
after returning from his mission in 1961. On 12 June 1962, he married Cheryl
Larson, his high school sweetheart, and they had five children: Thomas Rex, Ann
Marie, Jennifer, Gregory, and Peter.
During his mission to Argentina, Ted discovered his passion for
Hispanic cultures. Upon his return in 1961, he resumed his university
education, majoring in Spanish Literature. He graduated magna cum laude from
the University of Utah in 1963 and upon graduation, received a scholarship to
study at the University of California-Los Angeles. Four years later, he
received his Ph.D from UCLA, while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.
Ted found his first job at the University of Oklahoma and was an
assistant professor of Spanish literature. He taught at Oklahoma for a few
years and then transferred to teach at the University of Wisconsin's Spanish
department. In 1972, he again transferred universities and joined the Brigham
Young University faculty, where he taught Spanish-American literature and
culture. He has since been the director of several school departments and
programs at BYU, written several books in Spanish that have been published on
the poets in South America, published a number of articles in foreign language
magazines, served as founder and editor of Chasqui magazine, and served as a
LDS Church mission president in Chile. In January 2002, Ted accepted a call to
serve as the Chile Missionary Training Center President, where he currently
resides.
