Biographical HistorySusan Kent Greene
Susan Kent Greene was born on
3 April 1816, in Genoa, Cayuga
County, New York. Her parents were Daniel Kent and Nancy Young Kent. She was
baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also
called LDS or Mormon Church) on
14 April 1832.
In
1834, she married Evan Molbourne
Greene and they settled in Kirtland, Ohio. Following the westward movement of
the Saints, they traveled to Missouri, Nauvoo, and then to Council Bluffs,
where they remained for 5 years as Evan served as Postmaster to the emigrating
pioneers.
Upon their arrival in Utah, the Greenes were immediately called to
establish a school in Provo, where they lived until
1858. They subsequently moved to
Grantsville, where Evan became part of the Territorial Legislature and served
as a probate judge. In
1864, President Brigham Young
called Evan to settle his family in the Bear Lake Valley. After losing 2
children due to the severe winter weather, Evan was released and the family
settled in Smithfield, Cache Valley, Utah, from
1865to
1875. Evan was then called to
Springdale, Utah, to help establish a community there.
In
1869, Susan became part of a
plural marriage, as Evan married a second wife, Susie Platt. During her
lifetime, Susan gave birth to 13 children. Evan died on
2 May 1882. Susan Kent Greene
died in Oakley, Cassia Co., Idaho, on
17 April 1888.

William Leany
William Leany was born in
1815and died in
1891. According to Juanita Brooks
in her book,The Mountain Meadows Massacre, he lived in the area of
Cedar City when a party of Arkansan emigrants, supposedly involved in the
Haun's Mill massacre, passed through. His presence in the area and the
victimization of his family at the Haun's Mill massacre may have been a
motivating reason for the Mormons to attack the offending Arkansan party. There
are additional Leany items in Brigham Young University's John Steele Collection
(VMSS 528).
