Auguste & Pierre Chouteau, half brothers, negotiated for the U.S.A. a large of treaties with the Indian tribes. In one such treaty the Quapow ceded to the U.S. the territory lying between the Red River, the Arkansas River and the Canadian River extending west from the Mississippi River to the Spanish possessions. Auguste Chouteau was also an associate justice. The Chouteau family had interests in the Missouri Fur Company.
