The American Association of University Women was organized January 14, 1882, in Boston, Massachusetts. Its purpose: To unite alumnae of different institutions in "Practical and Educational Works." In 1921, the AAUW established its headquarters in Washington, D.C. In July, 1919, the International Federation of University Women was organized by members of the American and British Associations of University Women. They took the lead in establishing a world-wide organization in which university women of many countries could unite to work for their common goals of education and international understanding.
Not until February 1934, was the AAUW organized in Provo, Utah with an initial membership of 15, including one honorary member. The first significant project was to place Brigham Young University on the national AAUW "Accredited List." Up until this time, BYU has not been accepted by AAUW because of its lack of women's dormitories and its inadequate student-housing facilities. Thanks to the branch's prodding and persuasions, President Franklin S. Harris improved the housing situation. The Provo Branch of AAUW has been very active since its beginning in 1934. As of 1954, 16 branches had been organized.
Comprising the collection are presidential files (primarily annual reports), correspondence, history notes, project reports, newsclippings, speeches, workshop programs, periodicals, and scrapbooks with significant content.
